A Mother’s Day Gift from Mother Nature

Virginia Bluebells

Springtime along the dry riverbeds of the Messenger Woods provides a startling explosion of pastel colors. The blue, purple and green colors of the Virginia Bluebells are a delight to senses. The soft delicate spring ephemeral plants bloom from mid to late spring, typically around Mother’s Day. The moist, rich soil of this Will County Forest Preserve is ideal for this springtime annual. The nearly perfect growing conditions allow the bluebell to take over the woodland floor. Growing nearly two and a half feet tall, the view from the lower riverbeds make these flower’s bells a visual chime for one’s eyes.
